Jazz Studies Emphasis
The Jazz Studies program includes eleven ensembles and twelve other courses that are open to all qualified students at the University of Iowa. Specific courses are designed, respectively, to meet requirements in General Education, Music Education, Music Therapy, and all tracks of the B.M. degree. Currently, there are four professors and four graduate teaching assistants serving more than three hundred students enrolled in jazz coursework each year.
See Jazz Ensemble Auditions for audition requirements.
At the undergraduate level, B.M. students with a performance concentration may add a second emphasis in jazz studies by completing 21 s.h. of jazz studies coursework. Many of the jazz studies courses also fulfill other B.M. requirements, including music electives. For requirements, see Course Checksheet for Bachelor of Music: Secondary Emphasis in Jazz Studies.
Students in the Bachelor of Arts program in music may elect ensembles and coursework in the jazz studies area to complete many requirements in the degree.
Guitar instruction is offered only at the lower level for undergraduates and is open by audition only. Students may not enroll in the Bachelor of Music program with guitar as their major instrument.
