Joey has an extensive professional background in music education and music therapy. She received her music therapy equivalency and Master of Arts degree in Music Therapy from the University of Iowa.
Joey encourages the use of music therapy evidenced based practice in her teaching. This consists of synthesizing information from current research, applying clinical wisdom, and then assisting students to work toward what is best for each client. She has supervised clinical students as well as interns for many years, and was appointed an adjunct faculty member in 2003.
Her clinical expertise involves experience with groups as well as individuals in several areas: hospice, pediatrics, adult and child psychiatry, chemical dependency, preschool children, and palliative care. In addition, her music therapy practice with medical care in areas such as stem cell transplant, burn, intensive care as well as many others help her offer students a comprehensive and varied educational background.
Joey has consistently been a presenter for local organizations as well as regional and national music therapy conferences. She has participated in several research studies, and has published in music therapy as well as other journals. In addition to teaching, she currently is employed as a music therapist at Iowa City Hospice.
