Latin Jazz Festival

The UI jazz area is presenting the semi-annual Latin Jazz Festival for High School jazz ensembles. This day-long festival is designed to help musicians and band directors achieve a higher understanding of Latin jazz performance practice, style and authenticity when playing Latin charts.

This all-day festival features guest artist Oscar Stagnaro, a Berklee College of Music faculty member who is renowned for his work in Latin jazz.

The workshop includes:

  • Clinics with UI jazz faculty and guest artist
  • Performance by UI Latin Jazz Ensemble
  • Workshops with all ensembles on their Latin jazz charts
  • A casual performance at the end of the day

7:30 – 10:00 p.m. (The Mill Restaurant) UI Latin Jazz Ensemble concert with guest artist Oscar Stagnaro and UI jazz faculty. Open to the public ($5 general, $3 student, free for all festival participants)

Friday, December 13, 2019

8:30 – 9:00 a.m.  (Voxman Lounge, lower level) Welcome and check in. Bagels and coffee available

9:00 a.m. – 9:20 a.m.  All groups meet for orientation and information session.

9:20 a.m.  – 11:50 a.m. Bands have clinics with UI faculty and guest artist.

11:50 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.   Lunch break

1:00 p.m. – 1:50 p.m.  Latin jazz demonstration with LJE and guest artist Oscar Stagnaro.

2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Vox 2451  Individual jazz bands workshop 

4:00 p.m.  Break

4:15 - 4:45 p.m  Concert prep

5:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. (Voxman Music Building, Room 2451)   Concert

There is a $250 fee for each ensemble.
