Music Theory Midwest (MTMW) is a regional society of the Society for Music Theory. Originally chartered in 1990 to serve sixteen midwestern states in four "regions" (Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio; Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin; Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and the Dakotas; and Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), MTMW now boasts well over a hundred members from across the U.S., has expanded to include Western Ontario and Manitoba, and attracts participation in its events from around the world.

MTMW sponsors an annual conference of research in music theory that traditionally takes place in late spring at a midwestern university campus. The conference encourages scholarship by graduate students via the Arthur J. Komar Award for the outstanding student paper delivered each year, while simultaneously showcasing work by university faculty and independent researchers. More recently, MTMW has linked to this event a pre-conference workshop that focuses on a particular topic of interest in the field of music theory, providing an intensive learning experience and exchange for a small group of students and scholars.
