Iowa Honors Choir

You are here

November 6, 2017

Hello!  This fall we are very excited to start our second academic year in our beautiful, new state-of-the-art School of Music and Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa!  Once again, the choral, orchestra and band areas are joining together to host the Second Annual Hawkeye Honors Music Festival, which will include an Honor Choir, an Honor Orchestra, and an Honor Band, in addition to performances of our own premier ensembles.  I am pleased to invite you to submit the names of your best singers for the Hawkeye Honors Music Festival HONOR CHOIR to be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 17th and 18th, 2018.  We look forward to hosting you and your singers for what promises to be a positive, educational, and inspiring event. The Hawkeye Honors Music Festival will culminate in final performances (free admission) by the three honor ensembles in the lovely University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium!  We have had a wonderful time working with the talented students who have joined us in the past, and look forward to meeting and working with your students in the future for this event.

Nomination and Selection

The HONORS CHOIR will be limited to 150 singers.  The selection process is simple and straightforward.  We ask that you submit the names of a mixed quartet of your finest singers.  If you wish, you may also select a second mixed quartet.  The students whom you submit will be accepted into the honor choir.  Only sophomores through seniors are eligible.

Preparation

As in the past, singers are expected to prepare their music well before arriving at the Festival!  To ensure the highest quality of singing possible, quartet checks will be conducted on the first day of the Festival.  We ask that if a student is not prepared to attend the festival, please excuse the student from the event prior to coming.  We are confident that all directors will provide the necessary guidance in preparing the music prior to the Festival.

Festival Literature

Literature for the festival should be ordered from West Music Company in Coralville, IA. You can either talk with your West Music representative, visit their website (www.westmusic.com), or call Marcia Fuller at West (319) 688-6758. Since you will know how many students will be attending the festival (based on your selection process), please order your music as soon as possible.  West Music is in the process of ordering the music so that it is in stock.  If there are any changes in literature because of low stock availability, we will notify you of any changes.

The literature for the 2018 Festival will be as follows:

“Hallelujah” from The Mount of Olives: Ludwig v. Beethoven CPDL (will send pdf)
“O Mistress mine” from Three Madrigals: Emma Lou Diemer, Hal Leonard (HL 48003439)
The Gift to be Simple: Bob Chilcott, Hal Leonard (HL 0874032)
Ride the Chariot: W. H. Smith, arr., Kjos Music (KJOS 1015)
America the Beautiful: Carmen Dragon, arr., ALF 00-FXCX259

Deadlines

Please fill out the online application no later than Wednesday, December 20.  Upon receipt of your application, we will issue you an invoice for the registration fee due for the number of students participating.  The registration fee for each student is $25.00 and includes a University of Iowa Hawkeye Honors t-shirt and a boxed lunch for Sunday lunch. Checks should be mailed to the address below no later than Monday, January 8th in order to guarantee a position for your students.  No refunds for cancellations will be made after Tuesday, January 16th.

Schedule

Though the final details of the schedule are still being worked out, a sample schedule is enclosed for your perusal.  In addition to the Honors Choir, Orchestra, and Band performance in Hancher Auditorium Sunday afternoon, the Kantorei and University Choir, some of our finest choral ensembles here at the University, will perform in a special concert Saturday evening in the School of Music Concert Hall.

We will have special presentations for directors throughout the day on Saturday.

We are very pleased that Kevin Dibble (kevin-dibble@uiowa.edu), assisted by Kristin Ramseyer (kristin-ramseyer@uiowa.edu), will be our Honor Choir Festival Coordinator this year.  Both are graduate students in choral conducting and pedagogy and experienced music educators.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Kevin directly, or you can call me at 319/335-1677 or email me at timothy-stalter@uiowa.edu.

We look forward to meeting and working with you and your students at the Festival.  If we may be of service to you and your program in any way, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Timothy Stalter
