Iowa City Bass Day is a day-long workshop, geared towards high school and middle school students, to get together and have some bass fun. 

Who Should Attend

Bass Day is designed for elementary, middle school and high school double bass players. The information presented at Bass Day is invaluable to players, regardless of age or level. Chamber music ensembles will be formed based on playing level.

Parents are welcome to stay and observe; plenty of space is available at Voxman Music Building. Meals for parents are available for a nominal fee; please indicate on registration form. Meals are included in the registration cost for participants.

To Participate

Participation in I.C. Bass Day is $45 for 4-7 Grades, $50 for 8-12 Grades, including full participation in the day’s workshops, as well as lunch and dinner.

Schedule

Grades 8-12

8:30 a.m. Registration, In the Voxman Music Building Lobby. Muffins, coffee, and juice served.

9 a.m. Technique Seminar and Warm-up A workshop designed to provide warm-up exercises and vital information on sound production, bowings, fingerings and other issues important to the double bass.

10 a.m. Audition Preparation Find out how to better prepare for your next audition, from battling nerves to preparing your music.

10:30 a.m. Mock Auditions Play the role of adjudicator as members of the UI Bass Studio take a screened audition. Listen to auditions, compare, and help pick the “winner.” Afterward, the panel will discuss aspects of the auditions and preparation that helped or hindered performance.

12 p.m. Lunch (provided)

1 – 3 p.m. Group Master Class with Volkan Orhon Solo and orchestral master class: Students are not required to play, but those who wish to should bring music they are working on or are familiar with.

3 p.m. Tennis Balls and activities

4 -6  p.m. Bass Ensembles Students will break into chamber groups (duos, trios, quartets) based on their playing level to rehearse pieces for the evening’s concert.

6 p.m. Pizza dinner (provided)

6:30 p.m. Bass Day Concert featuring faculty and student bass ensembles

Grades 4-7

12:00 p.m. Registration & lunch

1 p.m. Warm-up A workshop designed to provide warm-up exercises, as well as provide vital information on sound production, bowings, fingerings and other important bass issues.

3 p.m. Join the Group Class with Volkan Orhon

4 p.m. Tennis Balls and activities

4 – 6 p.m. Bass Ensembles Students will break into chamber groups (duos, trios, quartets) based on their playing level to rehearse pieces for the evening’s concert.

6 p.m. Pizza dinner (provided)

6:30 p.m. Bass Day Concert featuring faculty and student bass ensembles.
