Brass M.A., D.M.A.

Master of Arts in Brass (M.A.)

The M.A. degree in performance (brass) requires a minimum of 35 postbaccalaureate semester hours, of which at least 24 must be earned at the University of Iowa.

Degree Requirements

Recital and Final Exam Committees

Both committees, selected by the student and approved by the applied teacher, shall consist of three members. Both committees must include the major applied teacher and at least one other faculty member from the brass area.

The student must be prepared to present to the recital committee an advsiory hearing at least 10 days prior to the recital. In the event a recital is unacceptable, one additional recital (with different repertoire) may be given, subject to the same evaluation.

Doctor of Musical Arts in Brass (D.M.A.)

The D.M.A. degree in performance requires a minimum of 72 postbaccalaureate semester hours. The residency requirement is 39 s.h. earned at the University of Iowa.

Specific Performance Requirements

  1. MUS:7899 D.M.A. Qualifying Recital (0 s.h.)
    This recital is to be presented by the end of the second semester of registration (excluding summer session). In the event a qualifying recital is unacceptable, one additional recital with different repertoire may be given at the discretion of the examining committee. A UI master's recital may serve as a qualifying recital with the prior approval of the area; a full doctoral recital committee of four members must hear the recital.
  2. MUS:7900 D.M.A Recital (3-6 s.h.)
    Three acceptable full-length recitals, one of which may be a concerto performance with orchestra or other appropriate ensemble. Students have the option of requesting that the qualifying recital count as one of the three required recitals; this request must be approved by the brass area in advance. In the event a D.M.A. recital is unacceptable, one additional recital with different repertoire may be given in a subsequent semester, subject to the same evaluation. A maximum of one non-pass recital is allowed.

Language Requirement or Secondary Area of Music

The D.M.A. student has a choice of satisfying a proficiency requirement in French or German (other languages must be approved by the brass area) OR completing coursework in a secondary area of music. See details for these requirements on the D.M.A. checklist.

Committees

The recital, comprehensive exam, and thesis/essay committees are selected by the student and his/her major professor. All members of the thesis/essay committee and comprehensive examination committee must be members of the UI Graduate Faculty. The major professor must be included on all committees.

  1. The recital committee consists of four School of Music faculty members; three of which must be tenure-track, with at least two members from the brass area.
  2. The comprehensive examination committee consists of four School of Music faculty members; three of which must be tenure-track, with at least two members from the brass area.
  3. The thesis/essay committee consists of four School of Music faculty members; three of which must be tenure-track. This committee approves the thesis/essay topic (Prospectus) and conducts the final examination, an oral defense of the thesis or essay.
