Why did you pursue this certificate?
My goal was to learn about pedagogical approaches that could enrich my classroom experiences. Teaching is important for me, yet there are numerous challenges within and outside the classroom. I can only guide learners so much, but there are important details of design and instructional approaches that can influence learners. More importantly, we must remember we are human beings who are trying to make sense of the world through our situated interactions. I believe hitting the pause button to think about how to achieve meaningful learning is essential, and that is an experience I have been able to take advantage of within the teaching certificate program.
What have you learned from the certificate program? What's your favorite part?
I have learned about pedagogical empathy. It’s important to consider what everyone can bring into the classroom to enrich the learning experience. I have begun to apply a constructivist approach where I can decenter myself and rather serve as a guide for learners to build and apply knowledge. In music we are heavily engrained in making music--that is, it is integral for a hands-on approach--and as such, it’s important to make sense of the internal processes of a student and help them scaffold until they can do it on their own.
My favorite part of the certificate was taking Dr. Mitchell Kelley’s Seminar in College Teaching. It’s great to share teaching experiences with graduate students from different domains. The course helped me give words to experiences that I hadn’t been able to process. Likewise, the background diversity of my classmates helped me think outside of the box from what I had been doing.
How has the program prepared you for your future career and goals?
Yes, I wish to continue in academia. These are special places to think and engage with others. Education is one of the most liberating tools we have developed in human history. Through the certificate I have been more cognizant of what goes on in a classroom. I have learned about effective tools for efficient and meaningful engagement. I have also learned to adapt to the immediate and long-term needs of learners. Learning to teach is a lifelong continuous process ... There is much to learn. But looking back, I think I have grown as a human being for the better part.
Anything else you'd like to share?
I think graduate students should seriously consider taking the certificate. Knowledge is never wasted and there are special moments in life when we can have time to learn. The University of Iowa offers a special gift for which I am humbly grateful. To any curious colleagues, I say carpe diem!
