Collaborative Pianist
Biography
Dr. Minji Kwon is a Korean-born pianist, educator, and recording artist known for her dynamic presence on stage and in academic settings. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa, where she studied with Uriel Tsachor and Réne Lecuona and received the Iowa Performance Fellowship. Her doctoral research focused on the solo piano works of Croatian composer Dora Pejačević. She also earned a Master’s degree in Collaborative Piano from New York University under Grant Wenaus and Deirdre O’Donohue, where she served as Adjunct Professor.
A recipient of the Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship, Dr. Kwon has performed internationally in Seoul, London, Prague, Mexico City, Germany, and Austria, and in major U.S. venues including Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium and Weill Recital Hall, the Juilliard School, Columbia University, and the University of Michigan. She has collaborated with ensembles such as Orchestra Iowa, Cedar Rapids Opera, and international artists through the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria.
Her recording Portuguese Perspectives (MSR Classics) with oboist Courtney Miller was praised for its innovative programming and led to tours across the U.S. and Germany. As co-founder of Ensemble Yeon, she promotes Korean art songs through lecture-recitals nationwide. She also serves as organist at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, where she founded a chamber music series for the local community. Currently, Dr. Kwon is a collaborative staff pianist at the University of Iowa School of Music.
