Earn your BA and BM

Students interested in pursuing Music Education at the University of Iowa must earn both a Bachelor of Music through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degree from the College of Education. 
Students must maintain a GPA of at least 2.7 in all coursework after being admitted to the TEP. During their program, Music Education students complete General Education CLAS Core, Core Education, and music education professional content coursework . Course checklists vary according to your BM degree area: winds, jazz studies, organ, percussion, piano, strings, or voice.

Students who want to earn a Bachelor of Arts in music education must audition on their instrument or voice for admission into one of the performance studios.

Direct admission for eligible freshmen

Students who enroll after graduating from high school with a 3.0+ high school grade-point average, and who are accepted into a music studio, can be directly admitted into the Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Admission is contingent upon submission and acceptance of official verification of the student’s high school GPA prior to the start of freshman year and completion of a brief essay, an application form, and documentation of 10 hours of observation in a K-12 school music program, prior to Dec. 1 freshman year.

Successful applicants will then pursue a Bachelor of Music degree from the School of Music and take additional music education methods courses and professional education courses offered through the Department of Teaching & Learning in the College of Education.

Students not directly admitted may apply to the College of Education Teacher Education Program (TEP).

Applications are accepted:

  • March 1 to May 1 for summer and fall admission
  • October 1 to December 1 for spring admission

Scholarships

Music education students may receive a scholarship for their 9th semester due to their student teaching requirement.

  • Students that received a music scholarship for their first eight semesters will remain on that scholarship during their 9th semester (students will receive no less than $750 for that 9th semester)
  • Students that received no music scholarship for their first eight semesters will receive a $750 scholarship during their 9th semester.
  • Music Education students need to be registered full-time during their student teaching semester.

Requirements and program planning

Students interested in pursuing music education at the University of Iowa earn both a Bachelor of Music through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degree from the College of Education. Students seeking licensure/certification in music education should enroll in the BM program.
